Upcoming classes to be held
Classes to be held at the Lake Arthur Library in June:
- June 18th, 2012-Computer Basics: Computer Foundations (9AM to 5PM)
This course will cover ideas describing the basic hardware and software that is used to create a computer. It will cover topics such as use of the keyboard and mouse, the monitor, and the pieces inside “the box.” You will gain a fundamental understanding of computer networks and the Internet. You will also be introduced to the basics of software. What is Windows? What is a program? Finally, you will go through the initial startup, logon and navigation of the environment of a computer.
Then we will cover the basics of using Internet Explorer to browse and understand the Internet. This includes what is needed to connect to the Internet, understanding the browser window, and accessing popular websites. Printing from the Internet, creating bookmarks for favorite websites and keeping yourself safe on the Internet are also covered.
Lastly, you will learn how email works. You will setup a new email account for yourself. You will learn the basics of how to create, send, receive, and read emails. In addition, you will learn how to attach files such as pictures and resumes to an email that you send. Finally, you will learn the best practices of email use in the business environment.
- June 20, 2012-Computer Basics: Introducing Windows (9AM to 5PM)
This course is designed to introduce students to the Windows Operating System (OS). Students will learn the different areas of the Windows OS, and how to navigate this new environment. Students will learn the basic organization of files, folders, and libraries. There are also several programs included with the Windows OS. WordPad, Notepad, Paint, Windows Media Player, Calculator, and more are overviewed. Learning how to keep the Windows Operating System safe and how to get help are also covered.
You should complete the Computer Foundations course (or have hands on computer experience) before taking this course.
- June 26, 2012-Microsoft Excel Level One (9AM to 5PM)
This course teaches the basic functions and features of Excel 2010. After an introduction to spreadsheet terminology and Excel’s window components, students will learn how to use the Help system and navigate worksheets and workbooks. Then they will enter and edit text, values, formulas, and pictures, and they will save workbooks in various formats. Students will also move and copy data, learn about absolute and relative references, and work with ranges, rows, and columns. This course also covers simple functions, basic formatting techniques, and printing. Finally, students will create and modify charts, and learn how to manage large workbooks.
Additional classes will be offered at the Elton Branch during April and May 2012:
- April 27, 2012-Microsoft Excel Level One (9AM to 5PM)

Students enrolling into Basic Excel should have experience with Windows 7 Operating System environment OR have taken Computer Foundations and Introducing Windows. It is strongly suggested to have taken Word 2010: Level 1 before Excel to gain familiarity with the Office ribbon and basic commands of the Office interface.
- May 1, 2012-Microsoft Excel Level One (9AM to 5PM)
In order to register for these classes (class size is only 8 persons per class) a patron must go to the Louisiana State Library site located at: http://www.state.lib.la.us/ and then click on Louisiana Career and Job Center. Click on Training and then on SEE TRAINING SCHEDULE AND SIGN UP FOR CLASSES. Click on the title of the classes listed above and follow the directions to register. A patron may also register by calling 1-888-487-2700. This phone number should also be utilized if a patron registers for the class online but has a need to cancel. This is important because there are many patrons interested in these classes.
